Sample Follow-up Letter After Rejection Without Interview

One of the cruel realities of job-hunting is that you will receive rejection letters. Sometimes you'll be crushed to received a rejection letter after you've interviewed for a position, but other times, you'll get the dreaded "thanks-but-no-thanks" letter before you've even had the opportunity to interview. Just about no one writes a follow-up letter after getting a rejection without an interview. But that's a good reason to do it. You'll stand out because no one else does it. It's another chance to put your name before the employer. And because your approach is unique, the employer may very well remember you the next time there's an opening. This kind of follow-up can be very short and sweet. It won't take up much of your time, but it just might pay off someday:

Dear Ms. Wilson,
Thank you for your letter of Sept. 12. I was, of course, disappointed to learn I had not made the list of finalists for the sales position you are filling.
Since I remain confident that I have the skills and qualifications to excel in your company, I hope you will consider me for any other similar positions either now or in the future. I admire XYZ Company Corp. very much and will certainly contact you the next time I learn of an opening for which I'm qualified.
Thank you again for considering my qualifications.

Sincerely,

XYZ
